Publication share

Definition

The publication share indicator (expressed as a percentage) is defined as:

the number of publications of an actor (institution, country, etc.) as a share of the total number of publications within a certain frame of reference (world, for example).

Example 1

Table 1-3-50
France: scientific publications as a share of world publications, two-year citations and impact index at two years, all fields, over a long period (1993-2004)

Interpretation: In 2004 France's share of world scientific publication production (all fields included) was 4.7%. At the beginning of the 1990's, France's world share was on the rise, reaching 5.4% in 1995, where it remained until 1999 when a steady decrease began that is still in effect.

Example 2

Figure 4-3
European scientific publication share (%) of the three top regions  -- London proper, Paris proper, and Denmark – by scientific field in 2004

Interpretation: In European terms, London is very much oriented towards Biomedicine and  Fundamental Biology. Paris is oriented towards mathematics, while Denmark is somewhat focused towards Applied Biology / Ecology.

Example 3

Interpretation: Since 1999, the major world scientific producers (United States, Japan, EU members) have witnessed a decrease in their world publication share while certain emerging countries, most notably in Asia, have experienced significant increases in their contribution to world scientific publication.
