Interpretation: The Fifth Framework Programme for Research and Development (FP5), which ran from 1999 to 2002, attracted the participation of 74,731 research teams – including Euratom Programme projects (nuclear energy) but not including Marie Curie actions. Total French participations represented 12.1% of the whole.

Interpretation: FP5 oversaw the contracting and funding of 12,514 R&D projects, counting Euratom projects. France was present in 4,706 projects or 37.6% of the total, with an average of two French teams for each French participation. French teams were responsible for coordinating a third of the projects in which they participated, or 12.4% of all FP5 projects.
